2021 Q4 Goal Setting

Hello Lovelies, and welcome back to the blog.

It’s a new quarter, which means it’s time to set some new goals, so let’s jump straight in.

Here we are back at the Kanban-style Trello Board. If you’ve been here a while, you’ll already be familiar with this, but for those that aren’t, I use Trello as a digital sort of Kanban board. I still have categories for my tasks, but I don’t use the “to do, doing, done” modifiers. They all just stay on their lists and I modify the cards within them with checklist tasks that are small and actionable. In other words, either I complete them or I don’t.

I’ve already talked about my yearly goals in another post, so let’s jump right in and you’ll see how my quarterly goals match up with the goals I set at the beginning of the year.

Writing – 38 Goals

I have a few things in this writing category so let me explain them. First up, Fate of the World is the fringe project I’ve been talking about that is what I’ve been working on. I am kind of a hybrid “plantser” where I don’t really plan all my scenes in advance nor do I completely pants my novels–I do something in-between where I plan some scenes as I’m going along. So right now I have 16 scenes currently planned, but that will expand as I continue to work on the novel.

The other thing I am working on here is making connections in the worldbuilding umbrella projects. I threw a wrench in it when I realized my angels and demons series could and should be included in the worldbuilding projects and now I need to know how they all go together. I had some of it already figured out and I still need to figure other parts of it out, so this is the rest of what I want to work on in the writing category this quarter.

Business – 0 Goals

I still have a hard time calling my writing a business when I don’t make any money at it. Yes I have a few books online, but I pay more in website hosting and marketing fees than I make. Still, I want to keep this as a category, for future goals to be put into here.

Marketing – 28 Goals

There are 14 Fridays in Q4. Assuming I keep up a once a week schedule, I should need to post one blog post and one podcast post a week, therefore making 28 posts.

Travel, Training, Meetings – 3 Goals

I have 3 tentative goals set here, to attend my once a month writing group meeting. However, we have been short staffed at my actual day job and sometimes my group decides not to meet in December due to the holidays. I have not made the last two meetings due to staffing issues, but I will continue to try to make the meetings as often as I can.

Quarter 4 Overall – 69 Goals

I feel like this is a manageable load. Coming into NaNoWriMo season, and slowing down in my real job, 69 goals feels like an attainable number.

Discussion Questions

  1. How often do you set goals and how often do you check in with them?
  2. How was your quarter?
  3. How many goals did you set and how many of them were you able to accomplish?
